I planted corn, cantaloupe (first time), and pumpkins this weekend. I'm late, I know, but I figured better late than never! We shall see. I planted all these space-intensive plants around the side in my new raised beds. It means hand-watering until I get a
soaker hose hooked up or something.
The corn I did in short rows, just about 4 or 5 of them, so maybe 25 or 30 plants. I remember reading that they need to cross-pollinate and you're better off in short rows bunched together than longer rows.
The pumpkins are in the other end of the bed with the corn. I've done that before, where they end up mingling quite well together. The other bed holds the cantaloupe. I've never grown them before and I'm not sure how they'll do here. Growing up, my parents had fabulous cantaloupe every summer in the garden but I fear they're better organized than I am. The hand-watering is what worries me... just that I'll forget since I don't naturally walk around that side of the yard.
Oh, and sunflowers. My neighbor had really liked my tall sunflowers the last couple of years but I had used up all the seeds last year. He brought over half a packet of seeds to share so I planted those as well, at the end of the cantaloupe bed.
